Knights Harvest Accolades at Tiger Classic

Auburn, AL-- On a crisp fall morning, the MCPS Cross Country squad went to Auburn for the Tiger Classic and harvested its share of awards. The course was muddy and soft due to the extraordinary amount of rain seen in the River Region over the past few weeks. Yet, the Racing Knights were excited to be competing on the trails that traditionally yield the fastest times of the year.

Almost 120 girls toed the line for the Varsity girls contest, including some of the swiftest runners in the state of Alabama. The Racing Knights started well and Katherine Terino, Lizzie Terino, and Sarah Talbot were in the front pack at the first mile. Shannon Guin, Jessica Taff, and Allie Micher were close behind. Maggie Dene and Shelby Taff also started well. As the girls came around for the finish, splattered with mud and breathing huge gulps of the chilly air, Katherine was secure in fourth place (21:02). Lizzie held the final individual award spot in 10th (22:37) and Sarah Talbot was close behind her in 12th (22:43). Allie and Shannon surged to take 27th and 28th respectively (24:47 and 25:06) and complete the team scoring for the Lady Knights. Jessica sprinted home in 30th (25:17). Maggie cruised in 26:26 for 38th. Shelby sauntered across in 31:52 and 55th place. The girls finished fourth with 73 points in the small schools (1A-4A) scoring behind TR Miller (32), Lawrence County (66), and LAMP (72).

Encouraged by the fast times run by the girls, the MCPS boys lined up for their race with 177 other competitors. The course was still fast in spite of being chewed up by the previous races and the guys started well. Corey Cotter paced the Racing Knights with a blazing 18:24 finish, the fastest time ever run at Kiesel Park by an MCPS athlete. HIs fourth place finish made a huge difference in the team scoring. Jarrett Mason cracked the all time MCPS top ten (9th position) with a 17th place finish in 19:32. Senior captain Rich Mullikin took 19th in 19:48. Josh Stark kicked it in to finish 38th (21:09) and senior Ryan Crutchfield rounded out the Knight scoring in 41st (21:15). Skip Martin recorded 21:15 (43rd) and Jacob Burke was close to him in 21:43 and 48th place. Jake Crutchfield (22:26; 58th), Kyle Daniels (23:41; 66th), and Thomas Woods (24:22; 71st) closed out the competition for the Knights. In the team scoring for the boys, Lawrence Country took first by finishing in 5 of the top 7 spots. MCPS was second with 85 total points, just two points in front of LAMP.

Six Montgomery Catholic Students Named AP Scholars

Six students at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition for their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Alexandra Gilbert and Thomas Visco.

Four students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Roscoe Anderson, Nolan Jackson, Charles Kaiser, and Antonella Profio.

Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admissions process. Over 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or placement for qualifying exam grades. Montgomery Catholic Art Students Donate To Children's Hospital

High school students in Joane Grant's Art III class at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School not only wanted to create beautiful works of art, they wanted to make a difference. Ms. Grant's art students are no strangers to donating their talents for good causes; her students donate pieces each year to Hospice of Montgomery's annual silent auction, participate in the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art's Flimp Festival each spring, and donate to the school's Monte Carlo Night silent auction.

As the students settled in for the spring trimester, they approached Ms. Grant with a special request. They wanted to build a doll house and donate it to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. Ms. Grant was thrilled about their suggestion and helped them find just the right house.

The project took 10 weeks to complete and the students were thrilled with the finished product. The three-story doll house was complete with wallpaper, carpet, staircases, furniture, even a mailbox on the front porch. Of course, no doll house would be complete without a family of dolls.

Once the house was finished, the students were proud of their accomplishment and were eager to visit Children's Hospital. Denise Dexter, Facilities Design Director with Children's Health Systems, meet with the students in the hospital lobby and was pleased to accept their generous donation. "The doll house is beautiful and our children will love it. You are all very special students," said Dexter.

"We were all so excited to create something for children to enjoy. If it can help a child forget about being sick for just a little while, then I know we've made a difference," said Montgomery Catholic senior Allie Manzari.

Montgomery Catholic Cheer Sqauads Earn National Bid

Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School recently attended a National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Summer Home Camp held on Catholic's Vaughn Road Campus with over 34 cheerleaders in attendance.

Founded in 1948 by L.R. Herkimer, NCA/NDA hosts camps, championships, and events for 150,000 cheerleaders and dancers each year.

As part of the 3-day camp curriculum, the National Cheerleaders Association selects award winners at each of the over 1,000 camps it administers around the world each summer. Awards are given for individual and team accomplishments.

All three of Montgomery Catholic's cheerleading squads earned a bid to NCA's national competition in Dallas, Texas, and earned the spirit stick each night of the camp.

Sixteen cheerleaders were selected as All-American Cheerleader Nominees. All-American nominees display outstanding strength in motions, jumps, stunts, tumbling, dance, or leadership.

Five Montgomery Catholic cheerleaders were selected to as All-American team members including Sarah Armstrong, Jessica Barranco, Ann Marie Dean, Jessica Mount, and Kennedy Thomas. Selection as an All-American is the most prestigious award in cheerleading today. Participants vying for All-American status are judged on motion technique, jumps, tumbling, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection, and overall crowd appeal. These individuals are eligible to perform at various NCA Special Events.

Each of Montgomery Catholic's squad earned numerous ribbons at the three day camp. Montgomery Catholic names Chris Hall New Head Football Coach

Chris Hall, head coach at Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, FL, for the last two years, has been named the new head football coach at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School.

Hall, 41, succeeds Tim Trokey, who is returning to his family home in California to continue his coaching and teaching career. Trokey's teams were 25-27 in five years, and he led the Knights to the state playoffs in two of the last three years.

"This is such an exciting opportunity for me. I'm excited about getting back into a Catholic school community," said Hall, who spent four years as an assistant coach at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers. "I look forward to being a part of helping Montgomery Catholic develop quality young men, on and off the field."

Another thing that led Hall to seek the Montgomery Catholic job was the passion for football that is so prevalent in Alabama.

"There are so many great athletes in Florida, but nowhere is the passion for football any greater among players and fans than it is in Alabama. I look forward to working here and experiencing the great love everyone has for the game."

Hall took over a floundering program at Cypress Lake only three weeks before the first game of the 2007 season. The Panthers were 3-7 that season and 4-6 in 2008. However, under Hall the school's level of competitiveness improved drastically. The offense averaged 439 yards per game last season, fourth best in the state.

Prior to his time at Cypress Lake, Hall was the defensive coordinator at Bishop Verot and for two seasons at Okeechobee High School.

"As we began this process, our goal was to find the coach who was the absolute best fit for Montgomery Catholic. We wanted a person who could pick up where Coach Trokey left off and continue to build a consistently competitive, successful program," said athletic director Jim Tolbert.

"I am confident that Chris Hall is the right fit for Catholic. He is a high-energy guy with innovative ideas about how to build a football program that is a winner on the field and off. I'm excited to have Chris join our staff."

Hall is already on the job, meeting with coaches and getting involved with the off-season strength and conditioning program which kicked off last week.

Football practice officially begins in Alabama on August 3. Catholic will hold its annual Back To School Pep Rally at 6:30 p.m. on August 14 and then host Trinity in a pre-season scrimmage on August 21 at 6:30 p.m.

St. Bede Students Take "Passport Across America"

Students at Montgomery Catholic's St. Bede Campus took a "Passport Across America" during their annual field day activities. The Physical Education department, along with parent volunteers, set up a variety of activities all themed around the 50 states. Students were paired in their homerooms, with each students having an opportunity to participate at each station.

"Passport Across America" took the students panning for gold in California, calf-roping in Wyoming, a tug-of-war battle, "Hatfield & McCoy" style, in West Virginia, and launched a rocket for Alabama, to name a few of the field day activities. Accelerated Readers at St. Bede Ride in Style

Accelerated Reader is a tool that allows our students to read and then test on Accelerated Reader books. This program helps the teacher, student and parent steer the children to books that they can comfortable read and comprehend. It is most important that the student comprehends what they read. Students are to be at 85% accuracy or better.

At Montgomery Catholic's St. Bede Campus, the top 2 students from each homeroom in first through sixth grade who were at 85% or above were automatically picked to ride in the AR limo. Those students are the following: Chas Allison, Katherine O’Conner, Scott Nation, Anna Sadie, Joseph Dwyer, Grace Leslie, Jacob Flowers, Patrick Wade, Anna Catherine Barranco, Emily Claire Talbot, Cameryn Brown, Christopher DeJesus, Annabel Starrett, Margaret Ann Allen, Madison Gaston, Tori Barranco, Lucy Waite, Ivy Bach, Adam Bristol, Anna Marie Koerner, Kaci Philpot, Abaigeal Gilbert, Steven Higgins, Brendan Benning, Mary Reagan Starrett, Paige Barranco, Mary Janet McLaughlin, and Ashley Sulzby.

For each quarter students met the 85% accuracy and met their reading goal, their name was added to a “Wild Card” drawing. There were 12 “wild card” winners selected, they are the following: Tanner Carter, Annie Bach, Thomas McLaughlin, Sarah Rose Burden, Katie Fisher, Brianna Chevez, Mary Katherine Brunson, Marcelo Vilena, Ashley Karst, Mandy Jones, Trey Magdon, and Gabe Keating.

Thanks go to the generous donation from the St. Bede Parent Teacher Council that helped in providing money for the limo and prizes throughout the school year. Not only were the students driven around in style in a Hummer Limo from Touch of Class, but they also were treated to a Chappy’s sandwich, chips, soft drinks and dessert. All the students had a blast! Many students upon exiting the limo, commented, “That was so cool!” Next year, plans are to include even more “wild card” winners. So get reading!!!!!

Miles Serves as Elementary Principal for a Day

Montgomery Catholic third grade student Evan Miles recently served as "Principal for the Day" at the St. Bede Campus. Evan began the day, just as the principal does, with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a day full of monitoring the hallways, checking on each of the classrooms, and of course a few meetings. At lunch, Mr. Miles treated his classmates to tables covered with tablecloths and a special cake to share commemorating the day. Of the experience, Evan commented, "It's a lot of responsibility but it's been fun!"

McClure Outstanding In State Heptathlon Meet

Montgomery Catholic senior Brianna McClure placed 13th overall out of some 50 participants in the AHSAA state heptathlon championships held at Birmingham's Hoover High School.

McClure posted personal records in three of the seven events -- 100-meter hurdles, high jump and 800 meters -- scoring more than 4,000 points in the meet.

The meet included all six AHSAA classifications. She placed higher than any Class 4A girl, and only one other girl in an equal or lower classification finished ahead of her.

It was her first time competing in the heptathlon after two outstanding track seasons in which she qualified for the state meet in the maximum four events.

McClure, a Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award nominee and a Knights of the Round Table nominee, will continue her athletic career at Huntingdon College where she will run cross country.

Williamson, Esmont Receive Knights of the Round Table Award

Kelsey Williamson and Steven Esmont have been honored by the Montgomery Catholic Athletic Booster Club, which named them the 2009 Knights of the Roundtable Award winners.

The Knights of the Roundtable Awards, given annually to the most well-rounded female and male senior athletes, were presented at Montgomery Catholic’s varsity sports banquet held May 11 at the RSA Activities Center in downtown Montgomery.

Both Williamson and Esmont were multi-sport athletes, playing on varsity teams since the seventh grade.

Williamson played varsity softball, volleyball and basketball while at Catholic. She lettered for five years on the Lady Knights’ softball team before a knee injury during her senior basketball season shortened her career.

She won individual sports awards in every sport she played, including the Jack Kresek Coaches Award twice and the Fr. Pat Delahunty Sportsmanship Award twice. She was also selected a team captain. She participated in numerous community service and church activities and graduated with a 3.542 GPA.

“I have learned the importance of each individual player coming together as a team to accomplish a goal,” wrote Williamson in her Knights of the Roundtable nomination form. “I have been led to set new goals in life with the knowledge that it takes hard work and dedication to achieve them.”

Esmont, who has signed to play college baseball at Faulkner University, was a six-time letterman on the Knights’ baseball team and a four-time letterman in football. He was the baseball team’s most valuable player as a junior and senior.

He also earned the Jack Kresek Coaches Award in one of his sports. He was twice an all-tournament selection in the Jason Armstrong/FCA baseball tournament and has been named to multiple baseball all-star teams. He too has participated in numerous community service activities.

Of his experience as an athlete at Catholic, Esmont wrote in his nomination form, “It has taught me sportsmanship, leadership, and most importantly it has taught me that it is okay to have God as part of your team … I have learned to take pride in my school and I just hope somewhere along the lines, I have taught at least one person to do the same.”

Others nominated for the award this year were Roscoe Anderson, Teddrick Arrington, Hannah Been, Taylor Belsterling, Grace Carl, Josh Clark, Anthony Costa, Alexandra Gilbert, Wallace Harvey, A.J. Mayhan, Brianna McClure, Mara McCracken, Butler Parker, Kaitlyn Roberts, Haley Ann Scanlan and Trey Smith.

To be nominated, an athlete must have participated in at least two sports during their senior year. Nominations are made by the coaches at Montgomery Catholic and a five-person committee appointed by the booster club reviews the information submitted by each nominee in order to determine the winners.

Winners in 2008 were Meridith Anile and Alex V. Taylor.

A Day at the Alabama Nature Center by Mary Reagan Starrett

St. Bede’s Science Olympiad team from Montgomery Catholic arrived at school on May 18, 2009, like any other day. But by 8:00 a.m., students got into cars and slathered on sunscreen and bug spray. Why weren’t they in their desks studying? Where were the sounds of books opening and pencils scratching? As the cars drove away in the direction of Millbrook, the destination was clear—The Alabama Nature Center! The first activity was a nature walk through a beautiful forest. Along the way, the students stopped to learn about the different kinds of trees and plants, including Water Oak, Wild Ginger, and Virginia Creeper. They even tasted the leaves from a Sourwood tree! After the hike, the kids picked up bamboo rods and went fishing. The pond was full of big catfish and tiny brim.

“It was fun and interactive,” recalls one fifth grader, Kathleen Beesley. When they were done, they ate lunch and rounded off the day with a creek walk. The water was cold and gorgeous, and not even the sighting of a water moccasin could faze this fearless group. When the time came to leave, every child was completely at home with nature, and parents and children alike were hoping to come back soon.

Tim Trokey Resigns at Catholic: Returning Home to California

Montgomery Catholic head football coach Tim Trokey has resigned his position at Montgomery Catholic and plans to return to his native California.

Trokey, who is completing his fifth year at Catholic, met with team members Wednesday afternoon to inform them of his decision.

Trokey led the Knights to two state playoff appearances in the past three seasons, including a 7-3 regular season mark in 2008 and a second-place region finish, the school’s first season in Class 4A.

“I want to thank Montgomery Catholic for the opportunity to be part of such a great school,” said Trokey. “I appreciate the parents who have given their support. And, most importantly, I want to thank the young men I’ve coached – their effort and hard work have led to the successes we’ve enjoyed.”

Trokey is returning to his alma mater, Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, Calif., where he will be an offensive assistant.

“It has been my dream ever since I started coaching to one day go back to my old high school. Even though it is very difficult to leave these young men I care so much about, I feel I have reached a turning point in my life that makes this, in my heart, the right time to make this move,” said Trokey.

Trokey, an assistant at Alabama Christian Academy for seven years, came to Catholic in 2004, inheriting a football program that needed to be rebuilt. Progress came slowly but surely as the Knights went 4-6 in each of his first two seasons. However, the Knights’ improvement showed in 2006 when they went 6-5, making the Class 3A playoffs.

After dipping to 4-6 in 2007, Catholic rebounded last season to have the best record since the 1994 team went 8-3.

“Coach Trokey has done an outstanding job of leading our program over the past five years,” said Jim Tolbert, athletic director at Catholic.

“Tim came to Catholic and took ownership of the program. He believed Catholic football could be as good as any school we played and he helped our players and fans believe it too. He put 100 percent effort into helping our athletes improve on the field and off. He will be missed by the Catholic family.”

The process for hiring a new head football coach begins immediately. Information about the position has been posted on various coaching Web sites, including the AHSAA site. The school has appointed a five-person search committee to interview candidates and recommend a new coach.

Off-season football workouts will continue as planned under the direction of Catholic’s assistant coaches.

Knights Finish Second in State Golf Tourney

Senior Thomas Sutton shot a final round 72 and sophomore Scott Barranco shot 75 to lead the Montgomery Catholic golf team to a solid second-place finish in the Class 4A state golf tournament that concluded Tuesday at Capitol Hill in Prattville.

The Knights finished the tournament with a two-day team score of 617. UMS-Wright of Mobile, who won the Class 5A title last year, won the tournament with a 603.

Sutton, who recently signed to play college golf at UAB, finished second overall in the tournament. He shot a first-round 71 for a 143 total, just one shot in back of UMS-Wright's Bobby Wyatt, who shot 70-72--142 to win the individual title.

Other Catholic scores from the tournament were senior Barranco 82-75--157, Butler Parker 78-79--157, junior Matt Christie 80-82--162 and freshman Jacob Stinson 80-86--166. The lowest four scores in each round are used to establish the team score.

Congratulations to the Knights on an outstanding season!
