Montgomery Catholic senior wrestler Corey Cotter bounced back from the brink of defeat Saturday morning to capture third place in the AHSAA Class 1A-4A state wrestling tournament in Huntsville.
Cotter, wrestling in the 140-pound weight division, trailed Weaver's Dakota Sumners 5-0 in the third round of the match when he reversed out of his opponents' grasp and pinned him for the victory.
With the win, Cotter improved on last season's fourth-place finish and became only the second Catholic wrestler to earn a third-place medal in the program's four-year history. Preston Stone finished third last season.
Cotter opened the tournament Friday with a first-round pin over Austin Akins of American Christian, but fell in the semi-finals to Dalton Sanders of Dora. He won a consolation match Friday night over Treddie Gray of Oak Grove to set the stage for Saturday's exciting victory.
Congratulations Corey!
