Catholic Students Enjoy Celebrating Christmas on Campus

Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School students enjoyed preparing for Christmas at all campuses. The Middle and High School campuses decorated the school and made service part of their preparation for the Christmas season. The Middle School sponsored children through the angle tree program and were able to shop and donate toys and cloths for those less fortunate, welcomed Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi to campus and ended the semester with a Christmas Talent Show. The High School campus supported Children's Hospital with toy donations through the Key Club and Common Ground Montgomery's Christmas Store through the Young Women's Leadership club's Tacky Sweater fundraiser. Our elementary campuses both performed in their own Christmas plays, the choir sang at the Crump Senior Center and the students enjoyed a visit with Santa. All Catholic campuses participated in the band Christmas concert held on December 11 and supported the St. Vincent De Paul canned food drive.  A festive and giving season for the students.

Catholic Anatomy Students Assist in Surgery at Shelter

Montgomery Catholic High School Anatomy students assisted Dr. Cynthia Brooks at the Elmore County Humane Shelter with spaying and neutering dogs on Saturday, December 6, 2014. Montgomery Catholic's Anatomy teacher, Elizabeth Harbin invited her students to attend an optional field trip. The students that attended were able to gain service hours for the time they gave to the shelter while gaining hands on experiences in the sciences. A sincere thank you to the Elmore County Humane Shelter for allowing Catholic to have a class on site.

Stokes Named All-State Honorable Mention

Montgomery Catholic Senior Thomas Stokes was named All-State Honorable Mention Class 4A Running Back by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Thomas "T.J." Stokes had a great year with the Knights. He was honored this year as the Private School Player of the week by the Montgomery Quarterback Club for his performance September 12 against St. James. Stokes rushed for 185 yards on 15 carries in Catholic’s effort against Saint James. He tied a state record during the game with a 99 yard run from scrimmage for a touchdown. Thomas is the son of Ivy and Thomas Stokes Jr. of Montgomery.

Montgomery Catholic’s Push-Up Challenge

Students at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School’s Holy Spirit Campus have been busily doing push-ups during the first semester.  Coach Ken Klinger challenges the students each semester to a physical fitness competition.  In August, Coach Klinger encouraged the students to complete 2,000 push ups by December 15.  For those who reach 2,000 or more, he will host a Push-Up popsicle party.  During morning announcements on December 15, Coach Klinger congratulated the four students who reached and exceeded the goal.  Fourth grader Max Barranco was the top student with 3,125 push-ups.  In second place was sixth grader Cameryn Cool with 2,795 push-ups.  Third place belongs to Auburn Wilcoxson, a fifth grader, with 2,205.  In fourth place was Emily Klinger, a fifth grade student, who completed 2,028 push-ups.  Congratulations to these students who met Coach Klinger’s physical fitness challenge during the first semester.

Montgomery Catholic Club Sends Gifts to Children's Hospital Sugar Plum Shop

Carrie Woodling, a senior in the Key Club at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School, made a suggestion in a Key Club meeting at school one day that the club should send gifts to the children who have to be in the hospital at Christmas time.  The suggestion was in response to fellow senior and Key Club Division 14  Lt. Governor Derek Kelly's request for service project ideas from the club.  After that meeting, Carrie took the reins of that project, researched ideas, and found information on the Children's Hospital website all about the Sugar Plum Shop; a place where parents of children in the hospital can select gifts for their children. Carrie made signs to put up around the Montgomery Catholic High School campus and collected a wide variety of gifts for boys and girls of all ages. She then enjoyed delivering them to the hospital in early December.  Also, pictured are Catholic senior Ann Faulkner(left) and Derek Kelly (right).

Catholic Middle School Band Accepted to Troy Honor Band

Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School had nine Middle School students that applied and were selected to be a part of the 2014 Troy University Southeastern United States Honor Band. The students who attended the event at Troy University December 4-6, 2014 were: eighth graders: Nick Bowden, Ricky Treloar, Emily Claire Talbot (not puctured), Zach Moore (not puctured); seventh graders: Ashley Hayes, Whitney Jakim, Darian Riley, Hannah Vaccaro,  and Bobby Crawford. Congratulations to these Montgomery Catholic Honor Band members and their Band Director Mr. Alex Johnson.

Catholic Students Help Local Seniors This Fall

Fall is in the air and the Montgomery Catholic Key Club spent a beautiful fall day in late November raking leaves for two different senior citizens in the Montgomery area who were suggested to the Club by Beverly Perkins with the Montgomery Area County Council on Aging. The students had a great time raking and jumping in the leaves and visiting with the homeowners.  Pictured from left are Derek Kelly, student at Montgomery Catholic and Lt Gov for all Montgomery school Key Clubs, Madison Searcy, Jeong Choi, Reggie Jackson, President of the Club,  Marissa Craig, and Carrie Woodling.  Not pictured, but extremely valuable to the work done in these yards, were Mr. Doug Ruth of the Montgomery Kiwanis Club, the club that sponsors the Montgomery Catholic Key Club, and Penny Searcy, Madison's mother. Montgomery Catholic is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community in such meaningful ways.
