Montgomery Catholic's Senior Football Players Jackson & Stokes Named Players of the Week

Montgomery Catholic senior football players Reggie Jackson and Thomas Stokes were both honored in September for their performances on the football field.

Jackson was chosen as WSFA's athlete of the week for his performance at home on September 5 against Headland.  He had 135 yards rushing, two touchdowns and forced two fumbles that night. WSFA nicknamed him "Mr. September". Reggie is the son of Carylon and Anthony Jackson of Montgomery.

Thomas "T.J." Stokes was named Private School Player of the week by the Montgomery Quarterback Club for his performance September 12 against St. James. A senior running back, Stokes rushed for 185 yards on 15 carries in Catholic’s effort against Saint James. Stokes tied a state record during the game with a 99 yard run from scrimmage for a touchdown. He will be honored at the September 23 Quarterback Club meeting. Thomas is the son
of Ivy and Thomas Stokes Jr. of Montgomery.

Montgomery Catholic to Compete in BEST Robotics in 2014

Montgomery Catholic kicked-off their Auburn BEST Robotics series on August 27th. The Catholic math team will compete against teams from all over the state in a chance to show off their combined engineering, customer relations, and marketing skills. Dr. Profio, a math teacher at Catholic, helped in assembling his best BEST students at Montgomery Catholic. Other teachers such as Mr. Pitts and Mr. Johnson also assist in mentoring the students to further their math and engineering skills.

The customer relations team welcomed all of the other teams with goody bags filled with pencils, which is important for any math competition, and a card for important dates for the Robotics series. Lauren Smith, a 10th grader from Catholic, directs the customer relations department. The group of high school students used this time to examine the field, which will be navigated by the Montgomery Catholic robot designed by upcoming engineers headed by Leo Petters, a senior from Catholic.

Check out the Montgomery Catholic informative and attractive booth created by the marketing crew directed by Carol Edwards and Rebecca White. The RoboKnights passed out flyers and other goodies at Mall Day on September 28, in Auburn, Alabama, and will take the stage on Competition Day, October 11. Come by and support Team 13! GO KNIGHTS!

THE MONTGOMERY CATHOLIC ENGINEERING CLASS LEARNS HOW ACCELEROMETERS AND GYROSCOPES CAN BE USED IN ROBOTICS.

The Montgomery Catholic High School Engineering Class learns how accelerometers and gyroscopes can be used in robotics during an early class meeting this fall. Catholic seniors were flying mini drones in class. "This allows the students to experiment with an accelerometers tilt controls based on the angular velocity measured in the tablet", said their teacher Mr. Jens Johnson. Pictured learning how to fly the drones are seniors Courtney Cool, Rachel Fekete, Tiffany Do, Caitlin Smith, Gaten Armstrong, Hunter Walski, Carol Edwards, Derrick Kelly, Drew Tolar and their teacher Mr. Jens Johnson. The students are excited about the new class offering for the 2014-15 school year. Next on the engineering class list, designing their new laboratory. 

Catholic Brings Home First Place From Auburn University's AMP'ed Competition for the Third Consecutive Year!

The Montgomery Catholic Middle School participated in the Auburn Mathematical Puzzle Challenge (AMP'ed) this past Saturday, September 13, at Auburn University.  The MCPS team brought home first place for the third year in a row.  

The Montgomery Catholic students who competed were eighth graders Emily Talbot and Isabelle Dubon, and seventh graders Jason Flowers, Ashley Hayes, Savannah Johnson, Scott Nation, Katie Perkins, and Clare Wilson. The team sponsors are Catholic Middle School math teachers Julie Flowers and Tricette Savage. This is the third year that Auburn University has hosted this event, and the third year the Montgomery Catholic Middle School team has come in first place. All of the team members had a fun day together on the Auburn University Campus, using their math skills and coming home with a win. 

Racing Knights Bring Home 1st Place from Waffle House Invitational

On the shores of Oxford Lake at the 8th Annual Waffle House/Yellow Jackets Invitational, the Montgomery Catholic Cross Country team ordered up some of its best performances of the season. Eighth grader Amaris Tyynismaa set a meet record for the third week in a row en route to another victory as she covered the 5000-meter course in a state leading 18:01.77 time. As a team, the Catholic girls smothered the opposition by a score of 34-82 over host Oxford High School and seven other schools. In addition to Tyynismaa, the Racing Knights placed three other girls in the top ten; Katelyn Stark was fourth in 21:30.86, Sarah Beth Littrell seventh in 22:26.86, and Grace Leslie tenth in 22:53.02. Carlye Schmidt completed the team scoring by taking 12th in 23:08.40. Other Montgomery Catholic finishers were Annabel Starrett (15th), Chloe Smith (20th), Ann Faulkner (31st), Lacy Herbek (44th), and Madison Searcy (52nd).

The Catholic Boys covered most of the opposition by finishing second to Gadsden City 34-66. Patrick Gregorius led the team with a fifth place finish in 18:59.55. Devin Kelly also took home a medal with his 8th place finish in 19:11.05. The remaining Racing nights to finish were Grant Walker (14th), Winston Wright (15th), Angel Padilla (24th), Hugh Walker (25th), Daniel Reeves (24th), David Barber (40th), and Kyle Hines (74th).

The Racing Knights next meet will be on September 27th at Gateway Park here in Montgomery as they will join over 20 other teams at the Montgomery Academy Invitational.

Catholic’s Amaris Tyynismaa Smashes Course Record at Eagle Invitational

At the Providence Christian School Eagle Invitational Cross Country meet in Dothan on Saturday, September 6, Amaris Tyynismaa, an 8th grader at Montgomery Catholic, shattered the meet and course record en route to leading the Knights to victory. Tyynismaa blazed to a first place finish over the 5K course in 18:56.80, beating the previous record by almost two minutes. Close behind were teammates Katelyn Stark (22:32.45) in 2nd, Sarah Beth Littrell (23:37.32) in 6th , Carlye Schmidt (23:53.94) in 7th, and Grace Leslie (24:02.52) in 8th to capture the team title (24-50) over 7A power Enterprise and 7 other schools.  

The heat and humidity did not stop the Catholic Boys team from taking home a trophy. Although Enterprise won the team title, 34-46, over Montgomery Catholic, the Racing Knights secured the silver token. Patrick Gregorius paced the Knights by finishing fourth in 19:48.77. He was followed by Devin Kelly (20:08.70) and Grant Walker (20:23.83) in 5th and 6th place. Winston Wright (21:12.22) and Hugh Walker (21:17.82) rounded out the team score for Catholic by finishing 15th and 16th. The Montgomery Catholic Cross Country team is coached by John Terino and assistant coach Brianna Lisenby.

Nine Montgomery Catholic '14 Graduates Named Advanced Placement Scholars

Nine Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School students have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition for their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program® (AP) provides opportunities for motivated and prepared students to experience college-level courses while in high school, thereby fostering critical thinking and college persistence and success.

Daniel Lobello and Maddie O'Mara each earned the title of AP Scholar with Distinction by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and a score of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams.

Andrea Hayes, Ryan Norris and Saraelizabeth Parker each earned the title of AP Scholar with Honor by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of  3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

Four students earned the title of AP Scholar by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Alexandrea Micher, Anna Mills, Guillermo Ravelo and Sang Won Seo.

Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, research has shown that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience greater academic success in college than students who do not participate in AP courses. Congratulations to our AP Scholars!

Montgomery Catholic has 18 Seventh Grade Duke TIP Qualifiers

Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School has 18 seventh graders who have qualified for the The Duke University Talent Identification Program or Duke TIPS program for the 2014-2015 academic year. The 7th Grade Talent Search, which focuses on the identification, recognition, and support of high-ability students, offers qualifying seventh grade students the opportunity to take college entrance exams alongside high school students. Many 7th Grade Talent Search participants go on to earn exceptionally high scores.  Those who qualified are: Jack Allen, Tanner Carter, Nathan Downes, Lanie Doyle, Jason Flowers, Sophia Izer, Whitney Jackim, Savannah Johnson, Scott Nation, Katherine O'Connor, Charlie O'Donnell, Katie Rose Perkins, Cole Pierce, Michael Russo, Anna Sadie, Hannah Vaccaro, Patrick Whetstone and Clare Wilson.
