Nolen Named Middle School Principal

Maria Antoinette Nolen has been named principal of the middle school campus at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School.

“We are very excited about Maria’s experience and vision she brings to this position,” said Anne Ceasar, Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School President. “Maria will build upon the foundations of the Middle School and bring new and imaginative ideas to make it even bigger and better.”

Nolen is in her 15th year as an educator. A graduate of Christian Brothers University and the University of Memphis, she has taught in public and parochial schools in Mississippi and northern Alabama, serving as the assistant principal of Catholic High School in Huntsville this year.

“I look forward to building relationships with the students and parents at Montgomery Catholic as the middle school principal. Montgomery Catholic has a wonderful and rich history; I am delighted to be a part of it,” said Nolen.

Nolen assumes her new duties on July 1.

Newmeyer Named All Metro Soccer Player of the Year; Several Named to All-Metro Teams

Montgomery Catholic's Colin Newmeyer has been named The Montgomery Advertiser's All-Metro Male Soccer Player of the Year.

Newmeyer became just the fifth player in AHSAA history to score 100 career goals. Newmeyer scored 42 goals and had seven assists in 24 games this year and scored once every three times he shot the ball.

In doing so, he led the Knights to their first playoff trip in 10 years and nearly guided Catholic to a win in the playoffs as well.

He scored the team's only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Bayside. By season's end, he had racked up seven hat tricks (finishing with 16 in his career) and 115 total goals. Newmeyer, who will play for Tusculum College next year, was held scoreless in just five games.

More impressively, he racked up all the statistics and accolades while playing with a sports hernia. Newmeyer underwent surgery this past Monday and is currently suffering through a week of bedrest.

"I found out about it in the early winter and the doctor said it could have gotten worse, but it couldn't be more painful than it already was," Newmeyer said. Newmeyer said it wasn't a tough decision to play his senior year -- a season he had waited on since joining the Knights varsity team as a seventh grader.

Also named to the All-Metro Soccer team was Justin Hughes. Seniors Chancellor Maryland, Brennan Parker, and Greg Rhodes were named as Honorable Mention.
Rising sophomore Caitlin Sears was named as a forward to the All-Metro Girls Soccer team.
Rising senior Thomas Sutton was also named to the All-Metro Golf second team.
Rising sophomore Anissa Britt was named to the All-Metro 1A-4A Softball team. Rising freshman Jordan Fox earned Honorable Mention.
Rising senior Steven Esmont earned Honorable Mention for the All Metro 1A-4A Baseball team.

Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Earn Bid to NCA National Competition

The Montgomery Catholic Junior Varsity Cheerleaders recently returned from a National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) summer camp held at Auburn University.

The National Cheerleaders Association selects award winners at each of the 1,000 camps it administers around the world each summer. Founded in 1948 by L.R. Herkimer, NCA has been conducting camps for 60 years and hold events annually for 150,000 cheerleaders and dancers around the world.

The Junior Varsity squad was a National Championship bid winner at the camp which is awarded to the team exemplifying the best technical skills and cheerleading technique. This bid is extended to teams to compete at the NCA Senior and Junior High School National Championship held in Dallas, Texas.

Montgomery Catholic's team also received the NCA Safety & Spotting, Perfection before Progression, Organization, and Technique (S.P.O.T.) award as well as a spirit stick each day of the camp.

Six cheerleaders were named as All-American Nominees, which is the most prestigious award in cheerleading today. Participants vying for All-American status are judged on motion technique, jumps, tumbling, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection, and overall crowd appeal. These individuals are eligible to perform at various NCA Special Events.

The All-American Nominees from Montgomery Catholic are Murrey McDonald and Madison Roberts for jumps, Alex Kitchens and Mallyna Sessions for leadership, and Mary Ashley Allen and Blakely Savage for all-around performances.

Middle School Students Donate Hand-made Quilts to Charity

Middle School students from Montgomery Catholic display one of the quilts created in their Exploratory Sewing Class. Students designed and sewed two quilts over the nine-week course, donating one to Counseling Outreach for Pregnancy Emergency (C.O.P.E.) and the other for Family Promise.

Shown here with instructor Amy Ronan, left, are (left to right) Joanne Spotswood, Alex Manning, Erin Williams, and Claire Galluzzi. Students said it was a "good feeling" to be able to create such a beautiful and useful gift using their talents.

Sewing is just one of several Exploratory Classes offered to Middle School students at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School.
