Montgomery Catholic's Derek Kelly Honored at Key Club International Convention

Derek Kelly, a 2015 Honor Graduate of Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School, was honored with the Robert F Lucas Outstanding Lieutenant Governor Award from the Alabama District at the Key Club International Convention on June 26, 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The award is named for a former International Director of Key Club that worked tirelessly to support all areas of Key Club and increase its membership.  Derek was chosen for this award because he brought energy and enthusiasm to all the Key Clubs he served this past year in Montgomery area schools.  The local clubs under his leadership experienced growth in membership and service, including through activities Derek organized to benefit Children's Hospital of Birmingham, one of the main projects for the Alabama Key Club.

Derek had been an active and vital member and officer of the Montgomery Catholic Key Club prior to being elected the Lieutenant Governor of Division 14 for all the high school Key Clubs in the Montgomery area.  Derek published a monthly newsletter to all the local clubs and visited and participated in their activities.  He organized rallies in which all the Key Clubs of the local schools visit together, and he trained the officers of each school on how to be effective leaders in their own clubs. His rallies had the largest attendance of any in recent years. In all this, Derek exemplified persistence and dedication and followed the Key Club Motto of building home, school, and community while serving our nation and God.

Derek will attend the University of South Alabama Honors College in the fall and major in civil engineering.  He is the son of Sharon and David Kelly of Montgomery.

The Montgomery Catholic Key Club is a service club sponsored by the Montgomery Kiwanis Club.  If any local school wants to encourage students to serve in the community by starting a Key Club or reviving an existing one, email fgeis@alabamakeyclub.org.

Founded in 1873, Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School is an integral part of the Catholic Church's mission to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.  As an adult community, we share in the responsibility to prepare students for college and beyond while helping them grow to become persons of faith, virtue and wisdom.
